At Greenslopes Day Surgery, we offer several different LARCs which can be inserted. The three devices that we use are Contraceptive Implant – Implanon®, Hormonal IUD – Mirena ® and Copper IUD – Mona Lisa ®.
If you are booked in for a surgical termination and would like a contraceptive device as well, we can insert one of these devices during the procedure while you are asleep at a discounted price.
Contraceptive Implant - inserted under LOCAL anaesthetic only
The implanon is a plastic stick about 4cm in length that is inserted under the skin of your upper arm. It is used as a contraceptive method and lasts up to 3 years.
Hormonal IUD - available with or without sedation
A Hormonal IUD is a small T-shaped intrauterine device that made from a soft flexible plastic. Attached to the vertical arm of the device is a cylinder that contains a synthetic progesterone called Levonorgestrel. It is used as a contraceptive device, but also by women who have heavy menstrual periods.
Copper IUD - available with or without sedation
A Copper IUD is an intrauterine device that has copper wound around one or more of the arms. It is used as birth control and can also be used as an emergency contraceptive if inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex.
